The reason I do this…
My Journey
In 2017 my husband was diagnosed with ALS. We had just moved into our “forever” home and our son was two-years-old. Shock and horror probably best describe my feelings at the time, but mostly numbness.
The disease progressed quickly, and my husband went from working as a chef, to not working; to walking with a cane, to walking with a walker, to using a wheelchair, to being bed-bound.
For my part, I went from having a partner, to being my husband’s caregiver, while trying to balance parenting our son, working full-time and managing the house. Needless to say I was overwhelmed. Two things quickly became clear. One, I needed help. Two, I had to take care of myself or I was never going to make it.
Prior to my husband’s diagnosis, I had already been practicing meditation and yoga on a regular basis, but these two practices became my anchor during this time. At first I would get upset if my time was interrupted, but then I was just happy if I had even five minutes to myself. I cherished this time when I could be on my mat, or quieting my mind in a guided meditation. It brought comfort and relief.
My husband passed away in January 2020. Since then my son and I have been working through the grief the best we know how along with a wonderful support system of family, friends, and counselors. This site is my gift to those who continue on the caregiving path. We all are caregivers in one way or another, but for those of use whose lives are dominated by caregiving, it is so essential to make sure we are taking good care of ourselves. My hope is that you will find some resources here to sustain yourself and find some rest.
